Japan Foundation

The Japan Foundation is one of Toronto's hidden gems. I've lived here for years but it wasn't until a friend started working there that it hit my radar. The offices are located on the 2nd floor of the Colonnade at 131 Bloor Street West, and their space includes both an exhibit space and a public lending library for anyone interested in Japan and Japanese culture.

Their exhibit space is small but effective and their exhibits are usually stunningly beautiful - educational as well should you care to read the display cards. The current show is no exception. The Grand Shrine at Ise, with photography by Haruo Nakano, is well worth a visit, if you can manage the slightly limited opening times (see below). This show is complimented by a delightful display of images by Toronto photographer Matthew Brown in the Library, entitled Festival Day.

The Japan Foundation is about more than exhibits though. They also host lectures, tastings, and film screenings, most of which, like the exhibits, are free.
